How to use a cock ring: sizing, safety and choosing your first one
A cock ring sits around the base and slows blood flowing back out. The result is a firmer erection, more intense sensation and, for some men, lasting a little longer. It is the simplest upgrade there is, and the cheapest, as long as you follow a few safety rules.
The short answer
Put a stretchy silicone ring on before you are fully hard, wear it snug at the base, and take it off within 20 minutes. Remove it straight away if anything feels numb, cold or painful.
What a cock ring actually does
During an erection, blood flows in faster than it flows out. A ring at the base gently slows the flow out, so the erection stays firmer and feels fuller. Many men also find sensation more intense, and some find they last a little longer.
Medical vacuum devices for erection problems use the same idea: a pump draws blood in and a ring at the base holds it there. A cock ring on its own is not a treatment, though. If you have trouble getting or keeping an erection, see your GP.
Choosing your first one
Start with a stretchy silicone ring. It fits most sizes, it is comfortable, and it comes off easily, which matters more than anything else. Thin, very stretchy rings give a gentle effect; thicker or firmer rings give a stronger one.
Adjustable rings that fasten with a toggle or snap are the next step if you want a precise fit. Avoid solid metal or rigid rings until you know your size. They cannot stretch, and you always need to be able to get a ring off quickly.
Getting the size right
- Stretchy silicone rings fit most men, which is why they are the best first choice.
- For a fixed-size ring, wrap a piece of string around the base when soft, measure it, and compare with the size guide on the product.
- If it leaves deep marks, pinches or feels tight, it is too small. Snug is right. Tight is wrong.
- Packs with two or three tensions are a cheap way to find what suits you.
How to put it on
- Put it on before you are fully hard. It is much easier and more comfortable.
- Add a little water-based lube to the ring and to yourself.
- Roll or stretch it down to the base of the shaft. For a stronger effect, some men wear it behind the testicles as well, but start with the shaft only.
- To take it off, add a little more lube and roll it off. If a ring will not come off, do not force it: call 111, or go to A&E if it is painful or the skin is changing colour.
Safety rules
- Take it off after 20 minutes. Never go past 30: that is the limit UK urologists give for rings used with pumps.
- Remove it straight away if anything feels cold, numb or painful, or changes colour.
- Never sleep wearing one, and never use one if you have been drinking heavily and might forget it is on.
- If you take blood thinners such as aspirin or warfarin, or have a blood or circulation problem, check with your GP first.
- An erection that will not go down after 3 to 4 hours is a medical emergency. Call 999 or go to A&E.
Using one with a partner or a condom
Rings work well with condoms. Put the condom on first, then the ring over the top at the base. Use water-based lube with latex condoms: oil-based lubricants damage latex.
If you share a ring, wash it between uses or keep it for one person.
Vibrating rings
A vibrating ring carries a small motor on top, usually positioned for your partner. It is an easy way to add something for both of you without much fuss. Rechargeable ones are worth the extra few pounds over button-battery ones. Charge it before you need it.
Cleaning and looking after it
Wash it after every use with warm water and toy cleaner or mild, unscented soap, then let it dry fully. Silicone rings last for years if you keep silicone lube away from them; vibrating rings should never go in boiling water.
Questions
How long can you wear a cock ring?
Twenty minutes is a sensible limit. Never more than 30 minutes, and never while sleeping.
What size cock ring should I get?
Start with a stretchy silicone ring, which fits most men. For fixed rings, measure around the base when soft and follow the product's size guide.
Do cock rings help you last longer?
Some men find they do, and most find erections feel firmer. Results vary, so treat it as a bonus rather than a promise.
Can you use a cock ring with a condom?
Yes. Put the condom on first and the ring over it at the base, and use water-based lube with latex condoms.
Are cock rings safe?
Yes, used for short periods and taken off at the first sign of numbness, coldness or pain. Check with your GP first if you take blood thinners.
