LELO Hugo 2 vs Billy 2: which prostate massager should you buy?

Two premium prostate massagers from LELO. The Hugo 2 has a remote and two motors; the Billy 2 is simpler, waterproof and costs less. Here's how to choose between them, and why neither should be your first.

The short answer

Buy the Billy 2 if you'll use it on your own: it's silicone, waterproof, has eight patterns and gives about four hours of use from a two-hour charge, for less. Buy the Hugo 2 if you want a remote, so a partner can control it, or a second motor in the base. Neither is a first massager.

The verdict

For use on your own, the Billy 2 is the better buy. It's tapered silicone, 17 cm long and 3.5 cm wide, with eight vibration patterns and no remote: you use its own buttons. It's waterproof, so it suits the bath or shower, and a two-hour charge gives about four hours of use. The Hugo 2 Remote costs more and makes sense in two cases: you want someone else to hold the controls, or you want two motors, one in the tip and one in the base. Its SenseMotion remote changes the strength as you tilt or move it. If you've never used a prostate massager, start with something simpler and much cheaper, then move up to one of these.

Side by side

We haven't tested either hands-on, so this comparison uses the makers' own figures. Where a figure isn't given, the table says so rather than guessing. The Hugo 2's listing gives its size as 10.6 × 10.3 cm without saying what each figure measures, so we've left it out.

One thing to check if you compare prices elsewhere: the Hugo 2 here is the Hugo 2 Remote, the version with the SenseMotion remote. Make sure the listing you're looking at says Remote.

Where they differ

  • Control. The Hugo 2 is controlled with LELO's SenseMotion remote: tilt or move it to turn the strength up or down, or use its + and - buttons. A partner can hold it, or you can change settings without reaching for the massager. The Billy 2 has no remote; you use the buttons on the massager.
  • Motors. The Hugo 2 has two, one in the tip for the prostate and one in the base for the perineum, the area between the testicles and the back passage. The Billy 2's listing doesn't mention a second motor.
  • Water. The Billy 2 is waterproof and suits the bath or shower, though no IPX rating is given. The Hugo 2's listing doesn't say it's waterproof, so keep it out of water unless the instructions in the box say otherwise.
  • Battery. The Billy 2 gives about four hours of use from a two-hour charge. The Hugo 2 needs two hours before its first use, and its run time isn't stated.
  • Shape and size. The Billy 2 is tapered, 17 cm long and 3.5 cm wide; its insertable length isn't given. The Hugo 2's length and width aren't given.
  • Material. The Billy 2 is silicone. The Hugo 2's material isn't stated in its listing.
  • Price. The Hugo 2 costs more. The table above shows today's prices.

What's the same on both

  • Both are from LELO, both charge by USB, and both need a two-hour charge before the first use.
  • Both have eight vibration patterns.
  • Both lock: hold + and - together for 3 seconds to unlock. On the Hugo 2 you do this on the remote.
  • Neither listing mentions an app.
  • No warranty is stated in either listing, so we don't quote one. If yours arrives faulty, tell us within 30 days of delivery and we'll refund or replace it.

Who should skip each

  • Skip the Hugo 2 if you'll only use it on your own and don't need a second motor. The Billy 2 does the job for less, and it's waterproof.
  • Skip the Billy 2 if you want a partner to control it. It has no remote.
  • Skip both if it would be your first massager. A first one should be simple, with a flared base and about 8 to 11 cm insertable. The Rev-Pro Classic, with no motor at all, is our first pick.
  • Skip both if you want a remote but not a premium price. The Rev-Pro remote massager has 10 patterns, 6 speeds and a wireless remote, and costs far less.
  • Skip both if you'd like warmth. The Svakom Vick Neo 2 warms up to 38°C and has a magnetic remote that stores on its base.

Using either one safely

  • The prostate is a gland about the size of a walnut at the base of the bladder. A massager reaches it through the back passage, so shape and a gentle angle matter more than length.
  • Use plenty of thick water-based lube, and add more as you go. Avoid silicone lube on the Billy 2, which is silicone, and avoid numbing lubes: pain is how you know to slow down or stop.
  • Go slowly and stop if anything hurts. See a GP if you notice bleeding, or pain that carries on afterwards.
  • If you have piles or a fissure, or have had bowel or prostate surgery, ask your GP before trying.
  • Wash it after every use with warm water and toy cleaner. Don't share it without washing it first and covering it with a new condom each time.
  • Our guide to prostate massage for beginners takes you through the first time step by step.

Which to choose

Choose the Billy 2 if you want a slim, waterproof, rechargeable massager for use on your own, with about four hours between charges. Choose the Hugo 2 if a remote matters, because a partner will hold it or you want to change the strength without reaching for the massager, or if you want vibration in two places at once. New to this? Start simpler, then move up to one of these.
